Abstract

Whit the purpose of characterizing the native potato varieties using morphological and agronomic descriptors and the starch content, a non-experimental study was developed within the framework of the quantitative approach. Were realized randomized samples of the plants and tubers through the transect technique, in five potatoes growing farms in the Quío town located in the Huanuco region. We characterized 21 native potato varieties using 31 descriptors and native starch content was determined in 22 cultivars by the decantation method. The data of the studied variables were organized in a database and then we analyzed using descriptive statistics, multivariate analysis, and analysis of variance methods. The characterized varieties were grouped into three different phenotypic groups. The first phenotypic group consists of nine varieties, which are mainly characterized by their medium size and intermediate period length; the second phenotypic group consists of seven varieties, which are mainly late period length; and the third phenotypic group includes five varieties whose morphological traits are more diverse. In addition, three varieties have higher yields of native starch, Ishcupuro (24.14%), Huaricancha (23.49%), and Pukatarmeña (22.97%) whose averages were statistically different from the other studied verities. The results thrusting for carrying out other characterization studies of nutritional compounds, such as minerals, polyphenols, and carotenoids, to develop native potato products according to the needs of the society, their use in the food industry, as well as carry out genetic improvement research. of these native potatoes.
