Stinging larva Automeris metzli (Salle, 1853) (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae) in urban green areas of David, Chiriquí, Panama

In urban green areas of David, Chiriquí Province, Panama, the presence of a stinging larva has been found, so the aim of this study was to identify this species and to update its known distribution in Panama. For this, specimens were collected with the help of a plastic container and prepared with boiling water, for its final preservation in 70% ethanol. Next, specialized literature was consulted for the respective identification and databases of recognized institutions were reviewed to update the distribution of the insect. According to the results, the species of larva found corresponds to Automeris metzli (Salle, 1853) (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae), which has also been recently reported in backyard crops in Volcán, Chiriquí. The data collected indicates that the species is present in other parts of the country; having also been reported in the provinces of Darien, Panama, Veraguas, Bocas del Toro and parts of the Ngäbe-Buglé Comarca. In conclusion, the species of stinging larva found in gardens of David, Chiriquí Province, corresponds to Automeris metzli; which can affect people´s health due to erucism, such as pain and irritation. It is recommended to avoid direct contact and to go to the doctor if an accident occurs with this or other kind of poisonous animal.
